Metabolic Psychiatry for Non-prescribers: Full competency for Psychologists, Therapists, and Other Allied Health Professionals is a comprehensive 7 hour training program designed to equip non-prescribing professionals with the knowledge and skills to support clients using ketogenic diets as a treatment for mental illness and neurological disorders.

The course provides an in-depth understanding of metabolic psychiatry, ketogenic diets, and their role in mental health. It addresses common misconceptions, reviews key studies and research, and discusses ethical considerations and professional boundaries.

Participants will acquire skills in effective client support and managing expectations. They will learn to assist the treatment team in monitoring potentiation effects, guide clients in self-advocacy, and be well prepared to directly consult with prescribers as needed. The course also emphasizes promoting healthy behavior change. The course includes case studies, role-play exercises, and skill-building activities to provide practical examples and hands-on experience.

*This training does not teach how to administer, supervise, or implement a ketogenic diet*

Learning Objectives

 By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Gain essential knowledge for non-prescribing therapists supporting clients using ketogenic diets.
  • Understand the ketogenic diet in the context of current psychological theories regarding eating disorders.
  • Understand the research supporting the use of ketogenic diets for mental illness and neurological disorders, and gain insight into future research directions.
  • Navigate ethical considerations and professional boundaries when supporting clients on ketogenic diets.
  • Develop effective strategies for client support, managing expectations, and promoting healthy behavior change.
  • Identify potentiation effects associated with ketogenic diets and mental health conditions, and guide clients in self-advocating and consulting with their prescribers.

About the Presenter

Nicole Laurent, MA, LMHC, is a licensed mental health counselor and a recognized authority in Metabolic Psychiatry. She has over 15 years of experience in private practice, with a specialized focus on using ketogenic diets for mental illness and neurological disorders. Nicole is one of the distinguished recipients of the Metabolic Mind Award in 2022, an honor bestowed by the Baszucki Brain Research Fund, recognizing her pioneering work in this field. She also serves on the Clinical Advisory Board for Metabolic Mind and leads a working group dedicated to publishing case studies on ketogenic diets in the clinical psychology and psychiatry literature. As a CEU instructor, she combines her clinical expertise and passion for education to provide a unique perspective on mental health and nutrition.
